Vintage meisen kimono with a design of abstract shapes. Plaine weave beige base with designs in orange and yellow. The designs are stencil applied to the weft threads (yokoso-gasuri). The different colored warp and weft threads create a silky shimmer. The lining is in light and darker pink.

Condition: collectible, the fabric feels thin, there are visible stains on the center back and smaller stains in different locations.


Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
