Vintage purple meisen kimono with large orchids (ran) and stylized stream (ryusui) design. Plain weave purple meisen kimono with a gray/silver shaded art-nouveau style floral design of large orchids connected by a stylized flowing water swirl. The orchid flowers are accented with small magenta accents. The stenciled design is applied only to the warp threads (hogushi-gasuri), with the weft threads in a darker (black) color. The use of contrasting colors in the warp and weft results in an almost iridescent shimmer, especially visible in the gray areas, creating a metallic shine. This type of weave is typical for Chichibu meisen. The lining is in typical red and beige.

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
