Vintage meisen kimono with a very simple stylized floral motif. The reddish plain-weave base features a very simple stylized weft applied stencil design of flowers in organic shapes connected by flowing lines that show some similarity to a traditional flowing water (ryusui) pattern. The contrasting warp threads create a shimmering silky effect on the material. The hem lining is in a nice complementing yellow.

Condition: collectible, good, some small spots/stains, wool hem fabric is weak (wear/tear)


Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
