Vintage black meisen kimono with a red and silver pattern of tsuta (Japanese creeper, a type of ivy) in dark red with gray accents. The design is applied to the warp threads (hogushi-gasuri) while the weft is in all black. The contrast gives a silvery look to the gray leaves. The hem lining is in a matching wine red. The bottom lower hem is padded with cotton.
Age: vintage
Condition: collectible, wearable, good, there is a large (water) stain in the lining, some small stains on the collar
Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
