Vintage meisen kimono with colorful paint-like cross-hatched design. The colorful design of red, blue, yellow, and black crisscrossing and bending lines looks like a busy subway map turned into an abstract painting. The design is stencil applied to both the warp and the weft (heiyo-gasuri). The lining is in typical white and pink.

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
