Vintage meisen kimono with geometric and floral design. The design features large colorful irregular arranged five-sided shapes (pentagons) filled with hand-drawn-like flowers in black scratchy lines. The design is applied to both the warp and weft threads (heiyo gasuri). The lining is in white and light salmon pink.

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
