Vintage green meisen kimono with an abstract design. The green base features an abstract design of crossed yellow lines accented with red and white circles. The design is applied to the weft (yokoso gasuri), the green parts have a subtle gradation resulting line a vertical line pattern. The contrasting dark/black warp gives the kimono a nice shimmer. The lining is in white cotton and yellow mosurin (wool).

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
