Vintage beige unlined meisen kimono with trees and mountain stream scenery. The material is a typical hard (almost paper-like) meisen silk in beige, featuring a natural landscape scenery (fuukei) of green and red/pink trees with gray and blue/gray mountains and waterfalls. The design is applied to the warp and the weft threads (heiyo gasuri). There is a small square cotton lining/reinforcement (nagoya style shiki-ate) to protect the kimono fabric from ripping/stretching when seated.

Condition: collectible, not-wearable
Although the fabric itself is still strong, the stitching is very weak so in the current state, the item is purely for display. There is overall age-related discoloration/staining but not in an obvious way

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
