Vintage meisen kimono with a rectangle and modern cityscape design. The kimono features a beige background covered in rectangles filled with different patterns, some of the shapes feature a small modern cityscape design in the typical meisen palette of soft pink, blue, green, red, and yellow. The design is applied to the warp and the weft threads (heiyo gasuri). The lining is in white cotton and light pink cotton and silk.

Material is in very good condition for its age, there are some stains/small discolorations but due to the busy pattern and beige background they kind of blend in.

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
