Vintage black silk Meisen kimono with lightning (inazuma) design in kasuri crosses. The black background features a lightning pattern in red, white, and yellow, that is made up of small kasuri crosses (cross-hatched).

The kimono is in very decent condition for its age.

Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the bold designs and colors.
