Vintage silk Meisen kimono with a busy geometric pattern of circles and squares in brown, white, and gray. The pattern is applied to both the warp and weft threads on a beige base. The type of silk fabric used is a plain weave and a little stiff. The lining is made of jinken (rayon), a natural-synthetic made of wood pulp. Jinken is almost indistinguishable from silk, especially when combined with silk.
Age: vintage
Condition: good, collectible
There are some small stains but the kimono is still wearable.
Meisen refers to a weaving/production technique where the design is transferred to the threads using stencils before weaving. This technique optimized the production process and allowed to create affordable kimonos with colorful and complex designs. Meisen became popular in the early twentieth century. Although the designs are stencil applied they keep the distinctive feel of kasuri (ikat) woven splash patterns. In general Meisen kimono look more modern as a result of the designs and colors.
