Vintage black omeshi kimono with a colorful looped line design. This is an omeshi silk hitoe (unlined kimono). Omeshi silk is a type of crepe fabric woven with strongly twisted threads, that gives the fabric its typical (hard) texture and smooth drape. The kimono features a design of red, white and yellow lines with loops, applied to the warp threads, on a black background. The design has a distinct fuzzy edge as a result of the kasuri (ikat) technique.

Omeshi (or omeshi chirimen) is one of the types of silk used for the production of kimono that goes back to the Edo period. Omeshi silk is a type of crepe silk that uses very strongly twisted threads that create a typical (rough) grainy textured, (relatively) heavy, smooth draping fabric. One distinct feature of omeshi silk is that the fabric is woven from pre-dyed threads (sakizome). Omeshi kimono had a big comeback after the war (1950s-60s) but nowadays are not produced much. Depending on the design and pattern omeshi kimono can be worn on both semi-formal and casual occasions.
